Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A beautiful ensemble of hand-carved intaglios with two made from translucent carnelian and two made from opaque jasper. The most petite jasper intaglio features a left-facing image of Ceres (Greek Demeter) standing with wings and holding a wreath in her right hand. Next is a carnelian intaglio with the left-facing profile of an elegant woman. Third is a jasper intaglio featuring a seated, left-facing goddess with an attendee behind her. The largest carnelian intaglio bears an image of Minerva (Greek Athena) holding a spear in her right hand and wearing her signature helmet. Size of largest (Minerva): 0.65" L x 0.6" W (1.7 cm x 1.5 cm)

  • Condition: Largest intaglio repaired from two pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines; remaining three intaglios are intact and very good. All items have minor nicks to peripheries and minor abrasions to both sides. Nice preservation to incised details.
