Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A lovely set of four keys, each with a slender body, a rectangular key face, and a small suspension loop. Two of the keys are made entirely of cast-bronze; one key has a bronze body and an iron key face, and one key is made solely from iron. One key face has a solid composition, though the other three each display carved grooves matched to their unique lock. The bronze elements display areas of lustrous espresso-hued patina, and the iron components have some oxidation. Size of largest (all iron): 3.125" L x 1.1" W (7.9 cm x 2.8 cm).

  • Condition: Each key has surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use, slight bending to overall form, with some fading to incised details, and oxidation to iron elements. Key made entirely of iron has some losses to body and key face. Key with bronze body and iron key face has some losses to iron key face. Light earthen deposits throughout. Nice brown patina across bronze components.
