East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE. A gathering of four cast-copper menuki, petite ornaments meant to be displayed behind the cotton handle wrappings of a traditional Japanese sword. One menuki displays a pair of flowers attached to a leafy stalk; another shows a fierce dragon with clawed feet and sinuous whiskers; a third features a winged insect amongst a field of flowers and leaves; and the last shows a crab resting atop thin leaves. Each menuki bears thin layers of gilding (95-98%) that accentuate some raised details, and lustrous patina has formed across the areas without gilding. Size of largest (insect): 1.6" L (4.1 cm); quality of gilding: 95-98%.
