Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century. Four piece matched set of ceramic "Temple Jars" in a blue-on-white technique. Each bearing an impressed chop, unsure if the chop is from the actual period of manufacture. Each lidded vessel is decorated with abstract creatures that appear to have attributes of dragons, fish, and foo dogs. The lids each have a kneeling foo dog - temple guardians. One of the accompanying tubular jars is decorated with confronting dragons, the other with elaborate pheasants or Phoenix's. Each vessel is further decorated with bands of deep brown iron oxide. Largest vessel - Size: 3" W x 8" H (7.6 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: private Texas, USA collection, purchased as a single lot at Sotheby's Parke Bernet, New York "The Content of Mountain Crest: the Collection of Mrs. Loyce Mayfield at Birmingham, Alabama" Auction (June 10-11, 1977, lot 6)
