Description:

Near East, Sassanian Empire, ca. 500 CE. A collection of thirty multicolored carved stone stamp seals with incised designs, in hues of cream, caramel, beige, black, burgundy, gray, citrine, coral, wheat, emerald, and sapphire, all perforated for suspension. Two seals have a design with lettering around them; eight have floral designs; eight have animal motifs; three have human faces or busts, and the remaining nine have a plethora of abstract designs. Strung in modern times as a collective display rather than as a wearable piece of art, but beautiful nonetheless! Size: 8.5" L(21.6 cm); size of largest bead: 0.625" W (1.6 cm).

Seals bearing animal and other personal designs are one of the most enduring symbols of the Sassanian Empire, which was a prominent and influential kingdom that had great influence throughout the Old World after the fall of Rome.
