Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely trio of mold-made pottery oil lamps, each with an intricate design within the tondo. The smallest lamp has a flat base with a planta pedis (maker's mark), a rounded shoulder, a diamond-shaped wick spout, and a central tondo depicting a leaping goat and a lamb. The second lamp has a ringed base with no planta pedis, a concentric circle shoulder, a flared wick spout, and a tondo displaying a large amphora set within a foliate ground. The largest lamp has a concentric circle base with a planta pedis, a petite loop handle, a flared wick spout, and a deeply-recessed tondo with a radiating tongue-form motif. Size of largest (loop handle): 4.5" L x 2.75" W (11.4 cm x 7 cm).

  • Condition: Each lamp has surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, light char marks to wick spouts, small chips to bases, shoulders, wick spouts, and tondos, with fading to some raised details, and fading to coloration. Nice earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
