Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely set of three cast-bronze fibula brooches of classic 'crossbow' forms. The shortest has a dramatically curved body with a curved foot and a slender pin protruding from the verso. The second brooch has a similar form as the shortest with exposed coils that form the pin as well as a tab-shaped pin latch on the bottom. The largest fibula has a carinated midsection, a bulb-form foot, a triangular pin latch, and a thin pin that still articulates. Each brooch exhibits fine green and brown patina evocative of ancient Rome! Size of largest (articulated pin): 0.8" W x 2.125" H (2 cm x 5.4 cm).

Provenance: private Alabama, USA collection; ex-Roy Green collection
