Description:

Pre-Columbian, border area between Panama & Costa Rica (Diquis zone), ca. 1000-1500 CE. This group of bowls makes for a dramatic ensemble. The ancients of the Americas initially created pottery for utilitarian purposes, primarily for eating or serving food. However, in some instances the artisans went beyond creating merely functional pieces creating forms and ornamentation that revealed aesthetic interest as well as iconographic symbolism. These pieces ignite our curiosity. What were the messages intended by the geometric motifs painted on the surfaces of these pieces? Why was the globular form left unpainted? Scholars continue to make inroads but many questions remain. 3"T x 5"D at widest; 3-1/2"T x 4-1/2"D at widest; 2-1/4"T x 4-3/4"D at widest Provenance: Ex-Private Texas Collection All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
