Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec, ca. 1300 CE - 1500 CE. Lot of three examples of Pre-Columbian metalwork. First, a copper finial for a staff depicting a coyote deity with a walking stick. The Mixtec artisans were masters of metallurgy, surpassing other Mesoamerican cultures in craftsmanship. Metallurgy was introduced into the region around 900 CE. Copper work came to Mexico a bit later via Peru. Mesoamericans used metals for ornamentation, though their tools and weaponry remained Neolithic. Many experts agree that Mixtec metal wares set the standard for Mesoamerican cultures. Custom, museum quality stand. 2"H x 1"W

The Oaxaca master metal smiths used silver, copper, and gold to make all matter of wares - miniature pieces like this example, pendants, masks, beads, buckles, and bells employing hammering and lost wax process techniques.
