Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya, late Pre-Classic to Terminal Classic Period, ca. 250 BCE to 900 CE. Collection of three small eccentric flints, all made from obsidian. Eccentric flints are non-utilitarian stone objects; and the skill required to make these delicate and fragile objects would have been immense. They had sacrificial and ceremonial use, and are generally found in elite tombs and in offeratory caches in city centers. Eccentrics came in a wide range of forms; some, like these three, are lanceolate (leaf-shaped) and have tangs at the base, suggesting that they may have been originally attached to a shaft as a lance or sceptre. These would have been purely ceremonial weapons, but the blades of these eccentrics are still sharp. Size of largest: 2.25" L x .125" W x 1" H (5.7 cm x 0.3 cm x 2.5 cm)
