Pre-Columbian, Ecuador and Columbia, Manabi and Guayas, Jamacoaque and Guangala cultures, ca. 500 BCE - 500 CE. These ancient cultures from the area north of the Manabi province of Ecuador, created human ceramic figures intended for sacred burial sites. The Jama Coaque and Guangala artisans manifested a penchant for blending both naturalism and abstraction in their depictions of human physiognomy. Particular emphasis is placed on delineations of prominent noses and eyes, moon-shaped for the Jama Coaque and coffee-bean shaped in the case of the Guangala. The small Guangala maskette in this lot has perforations encircling the face which were likely intended for the attachment of further ornament, perhaps feathers or beads. The Jama Coaque visage and the othe+D95r Guangala piece are fragments. Nevertheless, they are large enough to include wonderful details such as pierced ears on the Jama Coaque and a nosering and beaded ear ornaments on the Guangala. - Condition: Jama Coaque piece and larger Guangala are fragments. Jama Coaque also shows bit of loss at ear. Guangala fragment was repaired from two pieces. Guangala maskette shows tiny bit of loss at nosering.
