Description:

Pre-Columbian, Aztec, pre-1500 CE. Three Aztec terracotta stamps, each carved with lively designs used to print patterns on either cloth, paper, or the human body. The longer oval stamp features an intricate geometric pattern and is covered with remains of cinnabar. One of the round examples features a stylized interpretation of Quetzalcoatl, the Plumed Serpent, also covered with cinnabar. Finally, the third features a carved eagle with outspread wings. These would have been hand made, in a tradition going back some two millennia (2,000 years) before the Aztecs. Sizes: Oval example measures 2-3/4"L (7 cm); both round examples ~1-1/2"D (3.8 cm). Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
