Description:

Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd Century CE. This is a trio of cast Roman bronze bells, each surmounted by loop handles. They make a complementary trio with their slightly different shapes and sizes. The largest of them has the most decoration, with the handle in an interesting shape and incised carving around the lip. Bells like this often hung as part of carved wind chimes tintinabulum) -- many of which had phallic designs (for example, the one held by the British Museum) -- and were placed in gardens and porticoes throughout the Roman world. Size of largest: 2-3/4" W x 2-3/4" H (7 cm x 7 cm).
