Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Near East, Anatolia, Chalcolithic Period, Bronze Age II, ca. 2700 to 2500 BCE. A set of three kilia heads made from a smooth brown-white marble, each roughly triangular in form with a narrow neck. Kilia are highly-stylized female figures made throughout the Mediterranean during the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age. They are characterized by bulbous heads, long necks, and flat bodies with wide, flipper-like arms. When first made, the faces would have had painted details like eyes. Archaeologists have interpreted these figures as female and call them "stargazers" because their heads are tilted upwards. Custom lucite display stands included. Size of largest: 1.125" W x 1" H (2.9 cm x 2.5 cm); 2.25" H (5.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private German collection, acquired in 1981
