West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples; Burkina Faso, Mossi peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fine gathering of artifacts from two distinctive West African cultures. First is a Yoruba wooden dance wand called an "Ose Shango" - as it is used in dance ceremonies in the cult of Shango - with a nude woman grasping her breasts while kneeling atop an integral circular platform. Second is a Mossi fetish figure made from a tightly-bound leather panel, the rounded head of which vaguely resembling that of a human, decorated with a woven leather necklace. Size of largest (Yoruba): 1.625" W x 7.7" H (4.1 cm x 19.6 cm); 8.6" H (21.8 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Yoruba wand is fractured along base. Yoruba wand has small chips to figure, handle, and headdress, with softening to finer details, insect damage, and several stable fissures. Mossi figure has light desiccation to leather, otherwise intact and very good. Both items have light earthen deposits throughout.
