Latin America, Mexico, Guerrero, Olinala, ca. 1920 to 1940 CE. A pair of lacquered boxes from Olinala in Guerrero, Mexico - the larger one decorated with four landscape scenes comprised of quaint houses set in rural fields, sprays of floral elements, and a decorative border, the slightly smaller one with more elaborate stylized flowers and foliage. The artist(s) of these boxes employed a color scheme of marvelous contrasting hues in various shades of red, blue, green, yellow, and pink on a black ground. Mexican lacquerware is a pre Hispanic tradition, one of the country's oldest forms of folk art. These examples were created via the technique known as aplicado (applique) where the designs are painted onto a base coat. This technique can be traced back to the 18th century. These boxes reveal a post-conquest European influence in the iconography comprised of stylized flowers and European pastoral landscapes. Beautiful hinged boxes for your precious keepsakes.
