Description:

Pre-Columbian, Bolivia, Bolivian Highlands, Lake Titicaca region, Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku culture, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A fine set of two hand-built pottery vases with planar bases, bulbous bodies, slightly narrow necks, and flared rims. One vessel has a pair of suspension loops just beneath the rim and a grey ground upon which a series of abstract geometric motifs are painted in hues of black and red. The second vessel has a pair of applied strap handles and depicts a series of highly-abstract linear and geometric motifs in black and red colors atop a vibrant orange ground. Size of largest (orange ground): 3.75" W x 4.75" H (9.5 cm x 12.1 cm).

  • Condition: Smaller vessel has losses to areas of suspension loops. Larger vessel has loss to area of rim. Both vessels have surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, fading to pigmentation, small nicks to bases, bodies, and rims, and light roughness across most surfaces. Light earthen deposits throughout.
