Description:

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Teotihuacan culture, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A fine pair of hand-built terracotta figures depicting mothers and their children. One figure wears a white-outlined shawl and a roundel-adorned headdress with her child seated in her lap, and the other wears an tan-outlined shawl with her child hanging on her shoulder. Both women boast large ear spools and white-painted faces with slit-form eyes and puffy mouths. A charming duo! Size of largest (child on shoulder): 3.25" W x 2.8" H (8.3 cm x 7.1 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Both figures have loss to one foot. Both figures have small nicks and light abrasions to base, body, and head, with fading to some areas of pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and traces of pigmentation throughout.
