Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 400 to 650 CE. A handsome pair of hand-built seated pottery figures that present as chieftains or lords. One sits with crossed legs, with an applied circular loincloth or belt, a necklace, and a fanning headdress. The other sits with the legs slightly bent in front with similar applied adornments and a pointed headdress. The faces of both are comprised of incised features, a small protruding nose, and earspools. These figures are both elite members of society, as indicated by their headdresses and jewelry. The surfaces have traces of the white pigments and the pottery surface has darker areas from burnishing. The naturalistic sitting poses of these petite figures is quite charming! Size: 1" W x 1.75" H (2.5 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: private Englewood, Colorado USA collection; ex-Martin Boxer collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired in the 1960s in Mexico City, Mexico
