Description:

Pre-Columbian, Hispaniola, Arawak/Taino peoples, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A pair of hand-built pottery bowls from the ancient Taino peoples, each with flat bases and shallow basins. The first bowl features two abstract anthropomorphic heads protruding from the rim as well as an incised labyrinth motif on the exterior walls. The largest bowl exhibits two squat, rectangular heads on the poles as well as similar incised motifs on the exterior. Size of largest (squat heads): 9.6" L x 3.375" H (24.4 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

  • Condition: Repair to one head on smaller bowl, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines; larger vessel is intact and very good. Both vessels have minor nicks and abrasions, with light encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
