**First Time At Auction**

Roman, North Africa, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A lovely pair of mold-formed terracotta oil lamps with ringed bases, tall walls, rounded shoulders with impressed details, recessed tondos, broken tab-shaped handles, and large wick spouts. One lamp bears a shoulder adorned with concentric circles, clovers, and a single leaf, with the monogram "Chi-Rho" for Jesus Christ in the tondo. The second lamp boasts a shoulder embellished with leaves and horseshoe motifs with a crucifix in the tondo, the top bar curving down to the left similar to a backwards "P." A wonderful group from Roman-controlled north Africa! Display stands for photography purposes only. Size of largest (Chi-Rho): 5.375" L x 3.25" W (13.7 cm x 8.3 cm).

  • Condition: Losses to handles of both lamps. Each lamp has surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks to wick spouts, bases, and bodies, and some fading to raised details. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
