Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A pair of petite free-blown opaque glass vases, also known as "ampullae". One is nearly black while the other is a pale creamy red; these surface colors are the results of deposits and each vessel would have been a translucent blue when first made. Each vessel is defined by a concave base with rough pontil scar, a spherical body with a narrow tubular neck, a flared and rolled rim, and an applied disc-shaped foot. Trailings decorate the surfaces of both. Size: 2.5" W x 2.75" H (6.4 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: private Dere collection, New York, USA, acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

#135311

  • Condition: Both are intact with rich deposits as described above. Both have pontil scars. This indicates that the vessel was free-blown. (The absence of such a mark would suggest that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or worn away over time.)
