Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A set of two slender toga fasteners, hand-carved from ungulate bone, each with gently-tapering pins surmounted by a finely-detailed male head. Both of the right-facing heads bear elegant almond-shaped eyes, aquiline noses, cupped ears, and prominent chins, with one bearing a full beard, and the other with a thin headband across his wavy coiffure. Pins like these examples were used by people of all levels of society to secure their togas near one shoulder. Size of largest (bearded man): 0.5" W x 3.75" H (1.3 cm x 9.5 cm).
