Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu or Chancay culture, ca. 1000-1300 CE. This lot of Andean textiles includes a bag comprised of wool yarns from alpaca or llama and a panel comprised of tightly woven cotton yarns. Both were dyed with natural dyes that have retained their vibrant hues, mainly red, chocolate brown, tan, cream, and tawny almond. The fine condition of the textiles is most likely due to the dry conditions of the Andes and protection from sunlight. Their compositions complement one another as both are comprised of stripes of varying widths, resulting in remarkable patterns conjured by the weavers' imaginations. 13-1/2"L x 8-1/2"W and 6-3/4"L x 6"W Provenance: Ex-Ben Kane collection, Portland, Oregon, acquired by his father prior to 1970. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

  • Condition: Remarkable condition given the fragile nature of textiles. Some wear and staining on panel. Bag shows minimal wear.
