Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, ca. 300 BCE to 1500 CE. This is a pair of pottery animal-shaped whistles from very different time periods -- one, a turtle, has the stylized and somewhat abstract shape to suggest the West Mexican shaft tomb culture, while the other, a jaguar, looks more Classic Maya or even Aztec period. Together, they highlight the timelessness of carrying a small instrument in one's pocket to make music at any time. Size of largest (jaguar): 4" H x 3-1/2" W x 2" L (10 cm x 9 cm x 5 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private Hooper collection, CA, acquired via family descent
