Description:

West Mexico, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. This pair of terracotta, hand built, figures manifest the expressive dispositions of Colima sculpture. The seated, obviously female figure features appliquéd details including elaborate coiffure, ear ornaments, coffee bean eyes, arm bands, and pendant necklace. The reclining figure appears to be experiencing an ecstatic state or perhaps a vision. This shaman-like figure is quite elaborately adorned with intricate headdress, neckband, detailed loincloth with tail-like appendages hanging from his belt, body markings or scarification and gorgeous red cinnabar pigment. Reclining figure 4-3/4"L and seated figure 3"T.
