Description:

Smaller Stamp - Pre-Classic Mexico, Tlatilco, ca. 1200-800 BCE. Larger stamp Aztec, pre-1500 CE. Scholars believe that stamps such as this were used to adorn the body for ceremonial rituals. Archaeological evidence in the form of ancient Tlatilco earthenware figurines with remnants of pigmented markings on their faces and bodies support this interpretation. The smaller Tlatilco (pre-Hispanic of the Valley of Mexico) stamp shows generous remains of ink created from cinnabar (bright scarlet mercury ore) adhering to a geometric design. The larger stamp shows more sinuous forms characteristic of the Aztec culture. 4"L x 3"W and 2"L x 1-1/2"W

Provenance: Ex-private Florida collection.
