Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Akkadian Empire, ca. 2334 to 2154 BCE. A wonderful pair of hand-built clay tablets of near-miniature rectangular forms bearing several lines of impressed cuneiform text. The first tablet has rounded corners, smooth faces, and three lines of text impressed on its front face. One face of the larger tablet features two lines of stamped cuneiform characters as well as 2 lines of impressed text and 6 lines of impressed characters on the verso. Though untranslated, these tablets were perhaps receipts or manifests for shipments of goods as well as perhaps the sender or intended recipient of said goods. Size of largest (stamped lines): 1.375" L x 1.3" W (3.5 cm x 3.3 cm)

  • Condition: Both pieces have softening to characters in some areas as well as light abrasions to both faces and peripheries, otherwise intact and very good. Smooth surface textures and nice preservation to most inscribed characters. Old inventory labels on one side of each tablet.
