Description:

Pre-Columbian, Panama, Coclé, Conte style, ca. 600 to 800 CE. The pair consists of two polychrome jars with leaf and geometric designs in black, cream, and red. One of the pair, in particular, has very well preserved artwork. Size: first jar measures 4-3/4"L x 4-3/4"W x 4"H; jar 2 measures: 5"L x 5"W x 4-1/2"H.

Provenance: Ex-private Rousseau collection, Durango, CO, acquired before 1984.

  • Condition: Jar 1 has wear around the body, including on the decoration, but the painting is still visible. It is fully intact but a crack has been repaired at the base. Jar 2 has less wear than Jar 1, with much of the decoration very clear, including on the lip; however, Jar 2 has a cracked base (not on the decoration) that has been partially repaired. A roughly 2" section is missing.
