Description:

Pre-Columbian, Olmecoid / Proto-Mayan, ca. 1000-800 BCE. This lovely pair of clay roller seals were likely used to mark textiles and/or human skin. One features intricate stylized geometric motifs framing a bone-shaped "hal" glyph that translates as "to manifest." The other is incised with a simple elegant double line characteristic of the Olmecoid. Plentiful cinnabar deposits on interior of stamp incised with double-line. Both measure 2"L x 1-7/8"D Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL acquired prior to 1970.   • Condition: Stamp with "hal" glyph shows sound repair and bits of loss on edges. Other has stable pressure crack. Both intact and good to excellent.
