Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Carchi-Narino Highlands, Narino culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A charming set of two hand-built pottery ocarinas with rounded bases, oblong bodies, and stylized animal effigies. The first instrument boasts a gourd-shaped body with a pair of abstract mammals on top, perhaps jaguars or dogs, with a conical mouthpiece and a pierced suspension loop. The second instrument has a conch-shaped body painted with red-brown pigment atop the cream ground and surmounted by an abstract simian figure with a petite head and a sinuous tail which curls around the squat mouthpiece. Size of largest (monkey): 1.875" W x 2.4" H (4.8 cm x 6.1 cm).

  • Condition: Both items have small nicks to animals, light softening to some finer details, and fading to original pigmentation. Gourd-shaped ocarina produces a high-pitched sound when played. Shell ocarina has chip to mouthpiece and does not produce sound when played.
