Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Mixtec culture, ca. 1200 to 1521 CE. A fine pair of hand-built and highly-burnished pottery bowls, each with a flat base, rounded walls, shallow basins, and thin rims. The smaller bowl has a shorter rim and exhibits a pair of radiating circles separated by two triangular panels filled with dense linear motifs on its base. The larger bowl has a more pronounced rim and displays a quartet of large spirals projecting from a central square on the base. The decorative motifs as well as the interiors of each basin are presented in a deep red slip atop a creamy-yellow ground. Size: 3.75" W x 1.375" H (9.5 cm x 3.5 cm).

  • Condition: Smaller bowl repaired from several large pieces with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Both vessels have surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks to rims and bases, and fading to some areas of pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
