Description:

North America, Midwest, Ohio, near Cincinnati, Late Prehistoric Mississippian culture, ca. 1350 to 1700 CE. A fine pair of discodials; each of stone. Both discodials are of circular forms with rounded edges, which is known as the perforated Tennessee style. Both faces of each ancient piece present risen peripheries that gently recess towards the center to annular apertures. The lighter piece is composed of a type of sandstone and is enveloped in a hue of creamy pink, while the darker stone exhibits shades of grey, taupe, and cream. These were used to play the game of "chunkey," which had many different rules and styles of play. These discodials would have been treasured possessions and could have been used for several generations. Size of largest: 2.5" W x 1" H (6.4 cm x 2.5 cm).
