Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine pair of hand-carved wooden Wayang Golek rod-operated puppets with fully articulated arms, bodies, and heads. The female character features a white face surmounted by a tall, crested headdress and wears a white skirt. The taller figure bears a pink face beneath a primarily red headdress and wears a tan and beige skirt around the waist. Both puppets are bedecked with blue and red bangles as well as brown cloth front panels outlined with golden yellow trim. Size of largest (pink-faced male): 5.4" W x 26.5" H (13.7 cm x 67.3 cm)

  • Condition: Heads of both figures and central support rod of male figure are removable. Loss to one arm bar on female figure as shown. Both figures have abrasions to heads and bodies, with minor fraying and staining to textile skirts, and fading to pigment on wood. Nice remains of original pigment throughout.
