Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mezcala culture, ca. 500-200 BCE. Impressive Mezcala carved stonework, starting with a highly stylized axe type hunchback figure carved from dark green speckled stone. The figure arms are held to abdomen as is characteristic of Mezcala figures, and low relief expressive facial features such as flattened nose and parted lips flow seamlessly from the stone thanks to the artisan's refined carving technique. Next we have a mottled white stone head also expertly string cut by the ancient artisan, manifesting an abstract visage rivaling those of modern artists such as Picasso and Matisse as both admired Pre-Columbian and Tribal art. 5"T x 1 3/4"W x 1 7/8"D (figure) 3 5/8"T x 3 1/2"W x 2 5/8"D (head)
