Mexico, ca. 19th Century CE. A pair of antique Mexican retablos depicting St. Anthony of Padua and St. Joseph, both holding the Christ Child. The first retablo depicts the popular image of Anthony of Padua holding the Baby Jesus. The tradition of this image stems from the story of Count Tiso of Padua, who witnessed St. Anthony communing with Jesus in child form while praying in his home. Here, Anthony is shown in the blue robes that were commonly adopted by Spanish Franciscans of the time as a symbol of their devotion to the Virgin Mother. In his right arm, Anthony holds the Christ Child, while in his left is a rod of lilies. 5-7/8" x 9-1/4"; Second, St. Joseph cradles the Christ in his arms, both smiling sweetly. Joseph is wearing his traditional robes of green and yellow, and holds a flowering staff. 9 1/4" x 6-3/4" Provenance: ex-Kelley collection, Colorado.
