Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A pair of charming grey chert "eccentrics" - one in the form of a lizard, seem from above with its limbs sprawled to the sides and its long tail out behind its body; the other in the form of a bat, with an "M" shaped body as its wings are spread. Chert flints are made using percussion, striking them with other stones; the process required to get a fine point requires training and skill. This particular piece of chert glows a rich pink, purple, and cream. Flints carved not as weapons, but as interesting designs, had sacrificial and ceremonial use for the Maya, and are often found as offerings in caches inside of stone monuments and other architectural features. Size of largest (bat): 3.3" W x 2.3" H (8.4 cm x 5.8 cm)
