Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 BCE to 800 CE. A matching pair of ornate, 98% silver ear spools, each composed of twin round discs set around a narrow socket, their edges decorated with thin, tightly-spaced openwork curlicues that form an elegant border. The delicacy of decoration belies the heft of these earrings - they would have been a significant weight on the earlobes of the ancient person wearing them! The smooth silver surfaces of these discs reflect a major Nazca artistic ideal in metalwork - despite their highly decorated textiles and pottery, they seem to have preferred to keep a pure reflective surface for gold and silver objects. Size of one: 2" W x 0.5" H (5.1 cm x 1.3 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.; total weight for both: 76 grams; silver purity: 98%
