Description:

Near East, Sassanian Empire, ca. 500 CE. Two fine examples of some of the most iconic Sassanian artifacts, stone seal beads, both drilled for suspension. One is a near-translucent, yellow quartz, polished to be smooth, with one face incised with a motif of a bust of a figure wearing a large hat. The other is a creamy red stone, probably agate, that is also polished, with one face bearing an incised motif of an ibex running. Size: 0.8" W x 0.55" H (2 cm x 1.4 cm)

Seals bearing animal and other personal designs are one of the most enduring symbols of the Sassanian Empire, which was a prominent and influential kingdom that had great influence throughout the Old World after the fall of Rome.
