Description:

Greece, Near East, Hellenistic period, ca. 3rd century BCE - 1st century BCE. Two tender terracotta representations of a mother and child emoting a sweet sentimentality embraced during the Hellenistic period. Works created on a more intimate scale such as these were intended to adorn mansions and gardens or to function as ex-votos. Another legacy of the Hellenistic period is the delineation of intricately draped robes, leading to the development of highly elaborate compositions based on the arrangement of folds, thereby creating a typically Hellenistic style that has come to be described as "baroque". The smaller statuette in this lot exemplifies this style to a tee. Measurement for larger example. 7.00"W (17.78 W cm) Provenance: Ex-Private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

  • Condition: Head of larger statuette reattached. Smaller example is a large fragment as shown. Else intact and good condition.
