Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic, Apulian, ca. 4th century BCE. A striking pair of lidded lekanides, both of near identical forms with knobbed handles on the lids and upturned handles applied to either side. Each lid is decorated with a polychrome color scheme of red, yellow, and white pigments on a black glazed ground. One presents a register of nested sideways "S" motifs and a band of Greek key motifs bordered by colorful circular rings on the lid. The other presents a register of nested sideways "S" motifs and a band of running spiral motifs with surrounding bud motifs bordered by colorful circular rings on the lid. Two fabulous examples of lidded lekanides that in ancient times were cosmetic containers, often given by fathers to brides on their wedding day. Size: 4.5" W at widest point x 2.625" H (11.4 cm x 6.7 cm)
