Greece, Athens, Attic style, ca. 450 BCE. A pair of salt dishes, made from dark red clay, with glossy black glaze over much of their surfaces. Both have pronounced feet and rims. Salt dishes or salt cellars would have had an important place at the Greek table, where salt was (as today) one of the most highly prized condiments. Size of larger: 4.1" W x 1.25" H (10.4 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005
