Description:

Paris, France, "La Campagne prise derrierre les fosses de la Ville d Utrecht, en Hollande," ca. 1781-1800 and "Vue du petit Voorhout une des promenade de la Haye prise du cote du pont du Coucamp," ca. 1780. A wonderful framed pair of antique Parisian optical views (also known as views, perspectives or "mondo nuovo" prints). Both are etchings with hand coloring in watercolor. One shows the Voorhout in The Hague / Den Haag, The Netherlands from the side of the Coucamp's bridge. The streets are filled with horse-drawn carriages, horsemen, and people. The other shows a countryside view from the city of Utrecht, Holland. Size of each (they are the same, and the prints including margins are the size of the frames): 18" W x 13" H (45.7 cm x 33 cm)

Such optical views emerged in the 1740s and were popular between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. They were viewed through a number of mirrors or by means of a Zygrascope, an instrument comprised of a mirror and a lens. These were the predecessors of 19th century three-dimensional images and stereoscopes. Developed first in Paris, optical views were later developed in London and Germany, enabling people to enjoy famous sights and landscapes of both the East and West.
