Description:

Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A fine set of two textile fragments composed of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in a tan-and-brown color scheme. Each panel depicts a stylized standing human figure, with one arm holding a hemispherical shield with a central conical boss, and a head that peers over one shoulder. The figure on the left holds one arm up in the air and has tapered sashes draped from the shield and one axilla, and the figure on the right has the axilla sash projecting into the air. Both figures are presented among a ground of branching vines, and the peripheries are outlined in dark-brown pigment. Mounted inside a display frame. Size of largest (rightmost fragment): 2.625" W x 4.2" H (6.7 cm x 10.7 cm); size (frame): 10.125" W x 8.125" H (25.7 cm x 20.6 cm).
