Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 1st millennium BCE. A pair of two dZi beads, each deep brown-etched-on-white agate stone dZi bead, with highly abstract motifs of circles and either curving or straight lines around them. Each bead is rounded in cross-section, with a slightly bowed-out shape in the center. For non-Tibetans, genuine dZi beads are made of agate, with sharply delineated patterns, symmetrical shapes, strong color, a glossy surface, and no flaws in the design. Ethnographic interviews tell us that to Tibetans, genuine dZi beads must also be free from defilement and possess amuletic powers. Size of largest: 0.65" W x 2.3" H (1.7 cm x 5.8 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Dr. Sid Port collection, California, USA, acquired in the 1980s
