Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early 20th century CE. A pair of fascinating wooden carvings, one depicting a man's face with a large mustache and eyebrows, the other the front end of a horse with its head pressed against its wide chest. The horse carving is very ornate, with decorative details all over it, while the face is simple and portrait-like. Both have a flat back for attachment. Size of largest: 7.8" W x 4.45" H (19.8 cm x 11.3 cm)

Provenance: ex Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970

  • Condition: Small losses and chips, especially from the lower right (facing) corner of the horse and the nose of the head. Wear to pigment as shown. Nice detail remaining with good aged patina and some craquelure of paint.
