Description:

Greek colonies, Italy, Apulia, Daunian, ca. 300 BCE. A beautiful pair of Daunian pottery vessels, both demonstrating the cultural commingling of the native Italians and colonist Greeks who settled in the area at this time. First, an olpe, with a rounded body upon a concave base, and a strap handle joining the flaring rim to the shoulder. Its broad rim was ideal for pouring wine. The body is decorated with linear bands of red on a creamy beige slip, and additional bands of red slip adorn the rim and handle. Joining this piece is a krater with an inverted body and twin raised loop handles upon a concave base - the exterior walls beautifully decorated with brown and russet linear bands of varying thicknesses as well as staccato markings along the shoulder and handles. Size: olpe measures 4.25" W (handle to opposite side) x 4.375" H (10.8 cm x 11.1 cm)
