Description:

Greece, Corinth, Rhodes or eastern Greece, Archaic Period, ca. 7th to 6th century BCE. A lovely set of two wheel-thrown, cream-slipped pottery aryballoi (singular aryballos) with elegant piriform bodies, tapered shoulders, and petite mouths. The shorter aryballos displays an abstract lion in profile with a short snout and a red mane on one side within a field of flowers. The larger vessel has a radiating petal motif on the base, frets surrounding the neck, and an enormous red-and-black rooster with widespread wings on the obverse. An attractive pair from ancient Corinth! Size of largest (rooster): 2.1" W x 3.4" H (5.3 cm x 8.6 cm).
