Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine pair of hand-built terracotta anthropomorphic figures of flat forms also known as "gingerbread" figures. The shorter one is extensively embellished with applied facial features, headdress, loincloth, necklace, and armlets, while the taller figure is delineated with incised markings over the front and back of the torso as well as an extravagant headdress. Both stand in almost identical poses, with their arms out to their sides and their legs parted. Excellent examples from the Colima peoples that playfully bring to mind those famous lines, "Run, run as fast as you can! You can't catch me. I'm the Gingerbread Man!" Size of taller: 7.25" H (18.4 cm) Size of shorter: 5.375" H (13.7 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
