Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Guanajuato River Valley, Chupicuaro, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. A handsome pair of vessels, the larger adorned with a stunning polychrome decorative program of stylized geometrics, striations, and net patterns in red on cream with black linear highlights,its round-bottomed form with twin lug handles for suspension; the more petite piece is a sweet redware bird effigy jar. Characteristic of Chupicuaro wares, the burnished surfaces are so rich and lustrous! Size: 6.5" in diameter x 4" H (16.5 cm x 10.2 cm)

  • Condition: Bird vessel intact with nice white wax deposits under bird head and tail. Rounded vessel shows stable crack from rim down shoulder and nice manganese. Old inventory numbers on bases of each.
